Family Centred Practice in the Context of Working with Immigrants and Refugee Families

The workshop explores practical ways of moving practitioners towards services that are more closely aligned with a Family Centred Practice by discussing relational and participatory components, effective communication, help-giving, cultural diversity with respect to parenting and the role of parents and caregivers. We will explore what it means treating families with dignity and respect, honouring culture, values and choices, as well as how family centred practice can be linked to a wide range of benefits for both children and families in their new environment.

Offered in collaboration with the Justice Education Society of BC. Project funded by Women & Gender Equality (WAGE) Canada, “Increasing Access to Quality Child Care in BC”.

Facilitator(s): Malgosia Tomanik

Malgosia is a Family Consultant who specialises in supporting children from preschool to high school age and their parents/caregivers in a variety of environmental settings. Malgosia has a master’s degree in education from the University of Szczecin, Poland. She earned numerous certificates from the University of Victoria, University of BC and Maastricht University; Certificate in Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, Certificate in Addressing Challenging Behaviours, FASD Training by MCFD in BC.
