Need a dose of enthusiasm and inspiration?
Teaching is way more complex than many
appreciate. It involves engaging so much
more than the brain in teaching facts,
strategies, processes and achieving
academic goals. Teaching is about changing
human behavior. And given that todays
students are digital natives, changing their
behavior can be more of a challenge than it
used to be. On top of that, our world is full
of fear and uncertainty, and that destroys
passion, especially over time. When you
focus on social cohesion, relational safety,
mutual respect and a wide variety of
opportunities for achievement, you will
create an environment that supports the
wellbeing and mental health of everyone
including staff. Sometimes what dedicated
teachers need in order to keep turning up

Maggie Dent
Presenter Information
Commonly known as the ‘queen of common sense’, Maggie Dent has become one of Australia’s favourite parenting authors and educators. She has a particular interest in the early years, adolescence and resilience, and is an undisputed ‘boy champion’. Maggie’s experience includes teaching, counselling, and working in palliative care/funeral services and suicide prevention. Maggie is an advocate for the healthy, common-sense raising of children in order to strengthen families and communities. She is a passionate, positive voice for children of all ages. Maggie is regularly featured on parenting blogs, podcasts and news sites, as well as being heard on commercial and ABC radio around the country. She also appears regularly on national TV. Maggie is the host of the ABC podcast Parental As Anything. She is the author of nine major books, including her bestselling 2018 book Mothering Our Boys and her 2020 release From Boys to Men. Maggie is host of the ABC podcast Parental As Anything and in 2021 released a book of the same name. Maggie has also authored several smaller books and e-books, and is a prolific creator of resources for parents, adolescents, teachers, educators and others who are interested in quietly improving their lives. Maggie is the proud mother of four wonderful sons, and an enthusiastic and grateful grandmother. She lives in the South Coast region of NSW with her good bloke Steve Mountain and their dear little dog, Mr Hugo Walter Dent.
