The “Language” of Materials: Nurturing the Artist in Every Child
How can materials become a “language” for children to express their thinking and understanding of the world? How can we nurture children’s innate creativity? Are there materials you have wanted to offer in your classroom, but were hesitant to try? This workshop will share real-life examples of children using clay, wire, pen, watercolour, natural materials, and recycled objects to give visibility to their thinking, feelings, and imaginings while also exploring the concepts of colour, line, sculpture, and design. We will discuss basic techniques to explore with each material, provocations that invite deep engagement, and questions that spark creative thinking, as well as practical tips and resources for offering quality materials with a limited budget.
