With an open heart and an open mind, participants will hear Jessica’s story. Participants will consider how taking a decolonizing perspective can support Indigenous children, youth and families, especially those being affected by the child welfare system. Participants will hopefully learn the difference between appropriation and appreciation of Indigenous culture. Participants will learn the importance of supporting Indigenous voices to inspire others to take decolonizing practice to education and child care.
Presenters: Ana Valle Rivera and Jessica Nadeau
Ana and Jessica are sisters not bound by blood but by love and relationship. As a child, Jessica had the odds stacked against her. Jessica came from an Indigenous heritage that had been affected by colonial trauma. Jessica ended up in the child welfare system and was statistically at risk for not graduating. When Jessica became a teen she fought for her rights and advocated for herself with social workers, family, and school. Jessica graduated and is now a happy and healthy member of society. Jessica is ready to share her inspiring story and Ana is ready to help others understand the importance of taking a decolonizing perspective to ECE, education, child and youth care, to support the resurgence of Indigenous children and youth.
