Talking and thinking about holidays in early childhood programs is a “hot topic”.
There is an increasing diversity of children, families, and staff who make up our programs. A lot of us have ideas of how to celebrate holidays, or some of us think we shouldn’t. There are some centres that choose ‘not to celebrate’, and others that try to celebrate all the holidays.
As an industry, we need to discuss whether “to celebrate or not to celebrate”. “A school needs to be a place for all children, not based on the idea that they are all the same, but that they are all different.” -Loris Malaguzzi
Workshop Objectives:
•Getting together and reflecting on our your thoughts and feelings about holidays in the curriculum
•How to avoid the tourist approach to celebrating diversity in your program
•Discussing appropriate choice for celebrating holidays in your program
•Looking at rituals and traditions in your program
•Reflect on what works best for us in our programs and classrooms
•Connecting with our families. What holidays do your families and children celebrate?
•Discover alternative ways to celebrate holidays
