Children’s time today is more structured than it has ever been at any other point in modern history. Is much of the dramatic play you are seeing about enacting media characters? How have we gotten to this place? What are we losing in human growth and development by not giving both time and value to unstructured play? What sorts of experiences facilitate children directing their own investigations and conclusions? Come and explore answers to these questions and what can we do about it.
Objectives:
• Discuss why we need many unstructured play opportunities to grow and
develop optimally.
• Recognize we need to observe children to identify ways in which we can
facilitate deeply engaging self-directed play.
• Identify opportunities for children to create and pose solutions to their own
problems.
