Tonight we will look at communication milestones and when / how to refer a child for an Speech-Language Pathologist consultation. This topic is broad will cover: language production and understanding, speech sound development, social language skills and play skills as they relate to communication. We will also touch on communicating with others where English is not the first language.

Colleen Cole and Sophia Ykema
Colleen Cole has been working as a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 21 years now. Initially she began her career in hospital settings at both Kelowna General Hospital and later on, Surrey Memorial Hospital. For thirteen years she has worked with the pediatric population exclusively at the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre until February 2017 when she came to Langley Public Health. Her special training has been in the areas of childhood speech and language disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delays and Feeding Concerns. Sophia Ykema is an Honours graduate of McMaster University (B Arts Sc)with a Master in Speech Language Pathology from Western. She joined Fraser Health as a Speech Language Pathologist in September of 2018. She is also certified in Hanen “It Takes Two to Talk”, DIR Floortime Level 1 and Lee Silverman Voice Treatment.
