About the workshops:
Pink Shirt Day, Orange Shirt Day, Pride Week, Earth Day: tackling concepts of allyship in age appropriate ways can be challenging and intimidating. Join Kate Dawson, from Terra Nova Nature School in Richmond, to unpack some big ideas around these conversations and curriculum. Referencing an emergent ‘Todd Parr’ project, Kate will share their team’s process, challenges and insights while exploring these concepts with young children. This presentation will include lecture, slides, and opportunities for questions and discussion.
Creating Environments to Influence Positive Behaviour – In this workshop we will examine how we can shape our environment to directly and indirectly navigate behaviours throughout our day working with infant and toddlers. We will explore ideas, experiences and inspirations through photos, shared stories and collaborative work. We will discuss not only how the environment influences Infants and Toddlers but also how it influences the Educators in their approach to children, families, coworkers and the curriculum.
About the facilitators:
Kate Dawson has worked with children, and their adults, for a very long time in recreational, child care, arts, and educational settings. Nine years ago she dreamed up Terra Nova Nature School with her amazing work partner, Emily Vera, and she’s pretty sure she’ll be there until she can no longer carry a backpack while jumping ditches and running with preschoolers.
Having worked in the field of Early Childhood Education for over 20 years, Emily Vera has found a way to weave her passion for children, nature, and art together to create a supportive and exciting learning environment for children. Developing a sense of place, creating strong community and learning to respect the natural world are central in Emily’s teaching philosophy.
Ward Nakata has worked in childcare for over 30 years, a majority of which were at UBC Child Care Services working with infants. He has presented workshops throughout the province and has been a guest speaker at various institutions as well. Ward is a past Board Director of ECEBC where he proudly served for seven years. He has three children and a partner who also is an Early Childhood Educator.
