Morning workshop:
Trauma Informed Practice and the Science of Early Childhood Development
Kim will provide an introduction to Trauma Informed Practice through the lens of the emerging science of what supports healthy brain development and what can derail brain development. Kim will review definitions and types of trauma, how traumatic stress may impact a child’s developing brain, and provide a brief discussion of the critical pillars of intervention to support building resiliency in children who have experienced early adversity.
Kim Hetherington, BSc. has been a social worker with the Ministry for Children and Family Development since 1992. Kim specializes in working with children and youth with complex development and care needs. Afternoon workshop:
Room Makeovers Using Community Resources & Loose Parts
Inspiring room makeovers don’t have to cost a fortune. With community connections and an understanding of the concept of loose parts the possibilities are endless. Of course if there is some money there are many ways to make your dollar go further. In this workshop we will explore:
-Before and after photos of a $100 makeover at the North Surrey Rec Centre
-How and where to access “freebies”
-Explore the many uses and possibilities of Loose Parts
-Some ideas and photos of simple changes that make huge impacts
Kristi Schwandt currently works for the City of Surrey and was originally hired as an ECE Facilitator assisting the Parks & Rec preschool programs transition into Responsive Curriculum. She continues to add to her repertoire and is now creating inviting, natural play spaces where children can learn and grow through guided self-discovery.
