If you have ever said “No” to a child then you will know that word can seem like an invitation into a meltdown. As adults, we can become frustrated when a child doesn’t respond appropriately to our instruction and continue with more “No’s”. Learning how to balance the importance of boundaries with the reasons why children struggle with the word, “no” is key; the language we use can be significant in the way children behave. Participants will be invited to reflect on how their beliefs about children influence the way they respond to situations and practically consider how to shift from the frustration of “No” and learn positive ways to respond to the children in our care.

Alicia Kirlik has been working as an ECE since 2011. A Day Without NO is inspired by a series of events where she challenged herself to only speak affirmingly to children for an entire day - the results changed her work, for the better! Alicia is passionate about inviting adults to see how every moment is an opportunity for children to learn and grow.
