Supporting Early Development: Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Other Neurodivergences in Toddlers and Preschoolers

In this presentation titled “Supporting Early Development: Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Other Neurodivergences in Toddlers and Preschoolers,” we aim to empower families and caregivers with essential knowledge and strategies for supporting their autistic and otherwise neurodivergent children. We will begin with an introduction that highlights the importance of understanding autism and other neurodivergent conditions in early childhood, outlining our key goals: increasing awareness, providing effective support strategies, and fostering an inclusive family environment. Next, we will discuss the variations that make autism a spectrum disorder, and discuss other forms of neurodivergence, exploring their characteristics and common traits, such as social communication challenges and sensory sensitivities. We will highlight early signs and symptoms that families can watch for during their child’s development including important milestones, helping them identify potential areas for support. Next, we will examine the potential impact of autism and neurodivergence on a child’s development, focusing on social and communication challenges, sensory processing differences, and behavioral patterns that may arise in daily life. Building on this understanding, we will introduce practical strategies to support children at home and in social settings. This will include creating nurturing and inclusive environments, using effective communication strategies such as visual supports, consistent routines, and fostering social skills through play and interaction. To reinforce these concepts, we will share real-life case studies that illustrate successful strategies and approaches, encouraging families to share their experiences and insights during discussion. We will provide a list of recommended resources, including books, websites, and local organizations that offer support and information for families. The session will conclude with a Question & Answer segment, allowing caregivers to ask questions and share any concerns or challenges. Overall, this presentation seeks to enhance parents’ understanding of autism and neurodivergence in early childhood, equip families with practical strategies, and promote a supportive, inclusive environment for their children as they grow and develop.
