Igniting the Circle of Compassion in Childcare

Learn Strategies of self compassion and self awareness guided by a compassionate care approach, BC Early Learning Framework and ECEBC’s Code of Ethics. In this workshop we will dive into why compassion and ethics are fundamental in our practice and in our relationship with children and families.

Karina Roman came to Canada in 1991 from South America (Peru) as a refugee. Karina learnt to adapt in a new country with her whole family very quickly and lost her sense of belonging for many years. She had great role models that showed her compassion and empathy. She has been in the ECE field for 21 years and has worked with a variety of families and newcomers from Siria, Sudan, Congo, Pakistan, Colombia, India, etc. and children with exceptionalities. She was also a Strong Start facilitator for Surrey for 8 years. She has also worked for CCRR, Surrey and First Steps for 6 years with many childcare providers and First Steps (Refugee pilot program) and worked for Inclusion Langley Supported Child Development for 3 years. She is a manager of a Child Care Centre attached to half way house and a shelter. She has also worked with many First Nations families and were humbled by many struggles they continue to suffer.
